Learn Something New Every Day

As a lifelong learner, I believe in the power of continuous growth and discovery. My first corporate job required me to study for and pass two of the CPCU exams (a rigorous insurance course) related to my job at the time. Since the material was closely aligned with my daily duties, I found it helpful and passed the exams with ease. Eight additional exams were required to earn the designation, and I thought, why not? I started the process, so I might as well finish.
A few years later, a co-worker challenged me to join him in earning a different designation. I’m always up for a good challenge, so, of course, I said yes. I truly enjoy the process of studying, learning, and being rewarded with new knowledge.
As an entrepreneur, I believe it’s even more important to keep learning. I constantly sign up for webinars, attend conferences with engaging speakers, listen to podcasts, and read non-fiction books.
Former College Football Coach, Lou Holtz, is also known for his many inspirational quotes. One that stands out is: "Every day you're either growing or you're dying," emphasizing the importance of personal growth and the choice we each have to embrace every day as an opportunity to improve. We can do that through actions and education.
While many of us continue to learn throughout our lives, how many of us make a practice of actively seeking out new knowledge every day? I suggest going beyond the daily news and social media, which can often reflect the biases of the author. Instead, seek out information that can help you grow into a better leader, employee, parent, teacher, coach, or any role you play, whether paid or unpaid.
Although I learn something new every day (or think I do), I’ve never kept a journal of my learning. I plan to start today. Here are just a few things I learned this week: the benefits of somatic therapy, how our past shapes us (beginning as early as in our mother’s womb), new marketing ideas for my business, and more.
I challenge you to join me in this journey. Keep a daily journal for the next week and write down what you learned each day. What can this new knowledge help you do to become a better version of yourself? I’d love for you to share your discoveries with me, and let’s see how we can all grow as learners and educators along the way.
