Beyond the Background

If you’ve been on Zoom as much as I have these past few years, you’ve probably noticed the variety of backgrounds we see during virtual meetings. From bookcases filled with leadership books to virtual beaches and blank walls, our surroundings send a message—whether we realize it or not.

My office recently celebrated an exciting upgrade: handmade shelves – an addition to the handmade desk – beautifully crafted by my husband, now grace the background of my virtual calls. Previously, people saw either a blank wall or a virtual boardroom with my logo on a whiteboard. But it made me wonder: How much does our background really matter?

Think about it. We’ve all seen the Zoom setups with too many stuffed animals, tropical beaches that make us long for vacation, or unmade beds and other messy backgrounds. Each of these choices sends a subtle message, consciously or not, about who we are and how we show up professionally.

On my new shelves, I’ve chosen symbols of resilience, purpose, and growth. There’s a small collection of elephants—a symbol of wisdom, power, and strength—qualities I strive to embody and inspire in others. A sunflower painting I created myself reminds me to always push beyond self-imposed limits. And a Red Cross book speaks to my passion for service, a value I hope shines through in every interaction.

It made me think: Our background, virtual or physical, isn’t just decor. It’s a part of our story. As leaders, the stories we share—including the environments we create around us—communicate our values and intentions to those we lead. Just as I chose to showcase symbols of growth and resilience, we can all think more intentionally about the messages we’re sending, both in our words and in the spaces we create.

Our environment can influence and inspire others, even subtly. Consider your own background—both literally and figuratively. Does it reflect the kind of leader you aim to be? Are there ways you can intentionally display values that align with your purpose? Sometimes, the smallest details convey the most profound messages.
